Hunters HD is a free turn-based strategy game that offers both excellent graphics and top notch gameplay. Set in a future where corporations rule entire planetary systems, you control a team of mercenaries called Hunters and complete missions ranging from assassinating enemy leaders to escorting scientists to safety. Successfuly fulfilling a mission gives you coin for buying armor and weapon upgrades for your team, as well as experience points that unlock special abilities and give access to better equipment.

Unlike other strategy titles in the App Store, Hunters HD shows off some very impressive graphics. The details put in the design of the backgrounds, units and action sequences all come together and make you feel as if you really are controlling an elite mercenary unit in some far-flung world. A good deal of thought was also put into the information panels, giving you a clean and easy-to-use interface for purchasing upgrades, managing your team and choosing contracts.

The gameplay itself also does not disappoint. You get a limited number of moves per unit per turn depending on the armor the unit is wearing. The moves can be spent on combat actions like mashing your enemies to a pulp with a hammer or burning them to a crisp with a flamethrower. Combined with an active fog of war and some very smart AI enemies, completing missions will really test your mettle. Once you've completed all of the missions for the day, you have to wait for 24 hours for new ones. It would have been nice if there was some story behind the missions though or if there was more variety in the missions (the game just mixes and matches objectives, environments and units). The team behind the game though is working on adding story-based missions, new contracts, hero characters and more.

Overall, Hunter HD is a must-download strategy game for the iOS. The app itself is free for both iPhone and iPad users and needs a $7.99 in-app purchase if you want your Hunters to level up beyond level 2.

  1. In the review it says the game is free? Can you confirm how I get the free version as I can't find it on the App Store.

  2. I think that Rodeo has moved away from the free trial model they were using when we wrote the review.
