If you are looking for a true RTS experience that leaves out the fluff and gives you the adrenaline shot of commanding and conquering you need, Land Air Sea Warfare (or LASW) HD is what you need. It's had it rough when it was first introduced to iPhone gamers because it was too busy for its own good. But when the iPad came along, that's where it really shone.

LASW HD is the RTS in the truest sense, removing the storyline and cut scenes to give you just the meat: some kickass skirmishes that will keep your blood pumping. You command the elite army of certain nation, building unit structures, defenses and mining energy and ore to further your goal of snuffing out your foe.

The graphics are well-executed and show a lot of detail. You really feel that you're seeing a satellite view of your base and units. The music, sounds and unit voice-overs are similarly excellent and I hear a hint of Red Alert in some of the tracks.

I'd also like to give a hat tip to the execution of the menu. While casual gamers might be a bit overwhelmed by the detail, it's just what a power strategist needs. You get both info and easy to use controls for selecting units, something you will very much need during the heat of battle if you're the micromanaging type.

Customization is yet another strong point of LASW HD. You get to choose not only the difficulty level, map size and the number of opponents, you can also choose the type of terrain, climate, victory condition, and any special conditions like no nukes or air units only. I'll point out now that the map is randomized as well, which adds to the fun and unpredictability. You can also customize your country, graphics, sounds and controls.

Gameplay is smooth and you'd think you were playing on a desktop. Since the difficulty is adjustable, you can play against the AI level that suits you or even team up with an AI. There's no multiplayer though, which is a bit of a downer. There's also no zooming, though it's not a big gripe. But the one thing you must see: mega units (see below).

Despite those, it's a very solid game and this is yet another iPad RTS you need to download ASAP.

Pros

  • Superb graphics and soundtrack

  • Customize everything

  • Easy to use commands

  • Mega units!

Cons

  • No multiplayer

  • Can't zoom in
