Enter a wizard-like battleground and exchange spells and slashes with elemental characters in Hero Academy. Robot Entertainment's newest free-to-play iOS game is an online asynchronous multi-player hoopla that will not only take away your boredom but will also tickle your brain and test your strategic skills. Similar to Words with Friends, it is an amusing turn-based game you can play with your friends whether you only have a 10-minute break or you have the entire day. But considering how breathtaking it is, definitely you will grab a few minutes to invite your friend and play, lucky if you don't end up playing the entire day! Especially when you're in the middle of a cliff-hanging battle, it will be hard to put your iDevice down.

The rules of the game are very easy to pick up, you can learn them in minutes. Your mission is to defend your crystals while also destroying the opponent’s, whoever gets his crystals destroyed first loses. Your army (either the council or the dark elves) will help you accomplish this. But easy as it may sound, it is not. With barely five moves allocated per turn -- which includes any movement like slashing your opponent, moving from tiles or using protective spells -- you must easily find tactics to move around the chess-like tiles, this becomes the trick of the game and where your IQ is challenged most.  Your warriors consist of strong-armed knights, old and powerful mages, healing clerics and others. In the free-play mode, you can only use the knights’ faction, or, if you're wiling to shed out some moolah, you can opt to purchase the dark elves unit for $1.99 with more splendid characters.

Beyond the exciting gameplay, it’s more thrilling to find out that you can invite your Facebook and Twitter friends to play with you! Owning an iPad is not a necessity (but it is favorable), despite the comparably smaller screen of an iPhone, you can just adore the game’s smooth interface. It’s amazing how the developers kept clear of complicated buttons, everything is one slide or click away. The graphics are delightful to look at, which can make you more enticed to the game. This is just undeniably a game for all ages.

Pros

  • Challenges your strategic skills

  • Great interface

  • Options to play with Facebook, Twitter and e-mail buddies

  • Interesting design and graphics

Cons

  • Need to purchase other custom options

  • Advertisements show up after every turn

  • Turn intervals depend on your opponent
