The second installment of Battleground Defense is ready for download in the App Store. Battleground Defense 2 The City by Evelyn Labs is a Tower Defense game where your main goal is to eliminate incoming waves of jeeps, trucks, and jets before they turn your city’s health to nada. Now why would military guys dispose all their might to your poor ol’ city? Who knows! You just gotta do what you gotta do.

The gameplay is quite standard up to the end – so are the defense towers that you can resort to. Machine guns, cannons, missile launchers, and EMP are all you have throughout the game. These towers can be upgraded into two unique turrets that can be further upgraded to a final form, with the exception of the EMP which is only upgraded into one form. The EMP is your sticky cloud or your tire flattener; its sole purpose is to slow units down.

The strategy in every level is to think of the best way to divert the route of the pesky city invaders as your towers are cleverly assembled to slow and dismantle incoming waves (yes, yes, I know already! Fieldrunners perfected this).

Battleground Defense 2 The City might not boast much compared to its counterparts in the App Store due to its overly simple TD mechanics, basic 3D graphics, and plain interface, but it's not a bad way to pass the time if you're looking for a quick game.

Facebook and Twitter sharing is good and leaderboards are great, but the gameplay…needs improvement, here’s why: There is no depth in story; no real purpose, the towers are fixed throughout the game, your only sense of progression would be unlocking levels that seem to look the same, and the level-up mechanic that we seem to enjoy in most TD apps is absent.

The App Store is a crowded place for games within the tower defense category. Developers have to create polished games with novelty just to keep up with the trend. For $2.99, this app would be a hard pick for the fans. A major update may be the trick to make players pay.

Pros

  • Traditional TD game

  • Facebook and Twitter sharing

  • Easy to grasp gameplay mechanics

Cons

  • Seen-it-all-before

  • Same tactics used at every level

  • Poor 3D graphics despite its powerful game engine

  • Element of surprise and progression = nada
